Rest & Relaxation Weekend Getaway, Local Style

In search of that desperately needed R&R break from the hectic, stressful, fast paced lifestyles we lead, without having the time and budget for an international trip? Then why not take a local trip? Somewhere far enough away to feel like a holiday, but not too far to drive, reasonable time and cost wise and somewhere to preferably get away from it all - completely off the GRID. No 3G, no cellphone reception, no electricity, but still comfortable.
Well we found it! The Matroosberg Mountains, just over 2 hours drive out of Cape Town, about 30kms outside Montague, and bordering the Karoo. Beautiful mountains, nature, waterfalls, fynbos, and just perfect for the local weekend getaway.

There are many places to stay in this area of the Western Cape, from trout fishing resorts, self catering getaways, 4 x 4 getaways, and the one we found, Simonskloof Mountain Retreat, with it's abundance of activities, such as kloofing, hiking, canoeing and bird watching. We took our dogs with, the best part of going local and dog friendly retreats, and caught up on such much needed R&R.

Solar geysers, paraffin lamps, wood fires, and sky that is so black you get to experience the full impact of the stars, like nowhere in the city. The remote location of these types of places is the main appeal, along with the fresh air and lots of walks for the dogs.

However one of the pleasant surprises, although we had not planned it that way, was the timing of the Spring blossoms. The amount of wild fynbos flowers blooming was amazing. It seems that Namaqualand is not the only place in the Cape to have an array of stunning wild flowers.

When next, the rat race takes its toll, take a trip off the grid. Take a drive, and explore the little lesser known parts of South Africa.

And just let the road take you...

Hi Abigail

Thank you for publishing such beautiful pictures. I'm from Namaqualand and seeing the pictures again while snooping around gave me a knot in my throat. I surely miss the place, as I'm living in the Boland.

And yes, Namaqualand is another great place for some R&R.

Thanks again,
Christo

Hi Christo,

Thanks for the comment. I think Namaqualand has to definitely be one of my next weekend breaks!
I love the wild flowers, I think it's so important to take time to look at their beauty, it's good for the soul.

Absolutely. Don't be afraid to venture into the Richtersveld (past Port Nolloth and Alexander Bay). For a camping getaway you can never go wrong with a week in Vioolsdrift many camping sites.

I guarantee a getaway that is good for the mind, body and soul.

I have never seen the Karoo so green and full of life and color
