Top 10 Baths with a View in South Africa

There is just something about a resort or hotel bathroom with a huge, comfortable bathtub and breathtaking view that spells out luxury. We went and found 10 luxury baths in South Africa, with views to die for, that we can just imagine ourselves blissfully soaking away the hours in…

Lion Sands Private Game Reserve, Sabi Sand, Mpumalanga
River Lodge, the soul of Lion Sands, was built on the banks of the Sabie River, positioned on a site with trees dating back 800 years. The luxurious thatched bedrooms each have their own private wooden viewing decks and airy, yet cosy, en-suite bathrooms (pictured above). With the river flowing quietly outside your room, you won’t even have to get out of the deep oval bathtub to go game viewing. And we couldn’t resist sharing a photo of the gorgeous outdoor shower – the perfect start to energise you for the day.

The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa, Camps Bay, Cape Town
Perched on the very edge of the Atlantic Ocean, with the magnificent Table Mountain as a backdrop, just a peek at the view from these sea-facing bathrooms will restore harmony to your body, mind and soul. Relax in a frothy, bubble-filled bath while watching the sun's rays sink below the endless horizon of the deep blue Atlantic - pure escapist luxury.

Dwyka Lodge, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, near Montagu
Dwyka Tented Lodge consists of 9 luxury tents in a horseshoe bend of a dry Karoo ravine and is surrounded by awe inspiring rock formations. Free-standing baths and outdoor showers exude an atmosphere of romantic seclusion – the ringing phones and traffic of the cities seem light-years away.

Oceana Beach & Wildlife Reserve, near Port Alfred, Eastern Cape
Overlooking the pristine beach and surrounded by bush, Oceana’s suites offer the ultimate, intoxicating combination of bathtub views – beach and bush.

The Oyster Box, Umhlanga Rocks, KZN
Overlooking Umhlanga’s iconic lighthouse, the lovingly restored Oyster Box Hotel harks back to an era of elegance and old world charm. Exquisite tiles, antique furnishings and a solid marble bath in the Presidential Suite, with dramatic views of the Indian Ocean, have to be seen to be believed.

Phantom Forest Eco Reserve, Garden RouteNestled in the Afromontane forest in Knysna, the outdoor baths of the elevated tree suites offer endless forest views and a tranquil solitude, shared only with the Fish Eagles.

&Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, near Hluhluwe, KZN
Phinda Mountain Lodge Suites are positioned to ensure complete privacy while making the most of the view over the lush Ubombo Mountains. Savour the fresh mountain air and lose track of time while relaxing in your deep bathtub – floating in your own little bubble above the earth.

Regent Luxury Apartment Hotel, Johannesburg
After a long day wheeling and dealing, or shopping up a storm, what could be more indulgent than coming back to your high-rise penthouse above the city, kicking off your shoes and climbing into a bath while watching the city lights of Johannesburg pulse in the distance? Not much, we think.

Tintswalo Atlantic, Chapman’s Peak, Cape Town
Situated at the base of Chapman’s Peak, each room of this luxurious lodge has its own unique view of the crashing Atlantic Ocean and the majestic Sentinel Mountain across the bay. Whale watching from the bathtub is even a possibility – pure bliss.

And yes, we know that is 10 already but we just couldn’t resist sharing this amazing Johannesburg ‘bath with a view’ as well, sent in by one of our readers.

Zietsies Guest House, Auckland Park, Johannesburg
Situated on arguably the highest koppie* in Johannesburg, with a 180° view to the north, east and west, it's little surprise that Zietsies Guest House offers jaw-dropping views over the city. And with a antique reproduction slipper bath such as this, in the most dramatic, plush bathroom you could imagine, you would be forgiven for never leaving.
* For our non-South African readers a koppie is a small hill rising up from the African veld.
