Top 5 favourite holiday destinations

There is something to be said for the classics. While we would all love to visit the new and trendy, off-the-beaten track places this year, sometimes a classic, feel-good, well-loved destination is just the ticket. A destination that, no matter how popular or busy, will always be worth a visit. Here are Sure Travel’s top 5 most popular holiday destinations from around the world…

MAURITIUS
Mauritius will never go out of style. One of the most popular destinations for South African tourists, and families and honeymooners from around the world, Mauritius is a true classic.
Popular highlights: Luxurious all-inclusive resorts, coral reefs, the warm Indian Ocean, palm trees and golden beaches and a spellbinding melting pot of cultures.
Don’t miss: Visit the historical landmarks of Port Louis, tour a rum distillery or tea plantation, marvel at the oldest botanical garden in the Southern hemisphere and experience a day of adventure in the sub-tropical forests.
Best time to go: Year round, although some prefer the winter season (July to September).

LONDON
With many South Africans having friends and family in the UK, and the huge array of historical and natural wonders to see in the United Kingdom, it’s no wonder that London is such a popular destination.
Popular highlights: Big Ben, the London Eye, Harrods department store, Buckingham Palace, West End shows, Madame Tussauds, Wimbledon, cosy pubs and the allure of all that royal pageantry and British pomp and ceremony.
Don’t miss: Trawl the mass of street markets around the capital (there really is something for everyone). Also, make the effort to take the 20 minute trip out of London to visit Greenwich, home of the Meridian line, the Royal Observatory and naval museums.
Best time to go: Year-round. Each season is enchanting so it depends on what you most want to experience – sultry summer in the parks, crisp spring days, the colours of autumn or a snowy winter.

NEW YORK
Big, bigger and biggest – New York has to be seen to be believed. Arguably the most famous city in the world, you can never have experienced all of New York and can never have visited too many times.
Popular highlights: Stroll through Central Park, eat a hot dog from a street cart, see the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State building and Times Square, and take in the city that never sleeps.
Don’t miss: Tour the neighbourhood of Harlem and learn about the role this area played in the history of jazz and take in the best unobstructed views of the city from Top of the Rock Observation Deck
Best time to go: Year-round. Like London, when you go all depends on what kind of season you would most like to experience.

DUBAI
The allure of a vibrant coastal city, deserts and camels, exotic souks and duty-free shopping in modern shopping malls, have made Dubai more and more popular each year.
Popular highlights: Shopping! Keeping the shopping aside, you can savour the spicy cuisine of the Middle East, ski on man-made snow indoors, cruise the city by moonlight on a dhow and enjoy a desert dinner in a Bedouin tent.
Don’t miss: Take the family to Atlantis the Palm marine and water park, take a trip out of the city to explore ancient forts and mosques and bargain for spices, carpet, gold and perfumes in an ancient souk.
Best time to go: November to April.

THAILAND
Even if it wasn’t one of the most affordable overseas holiday options available, Thailand would still be popular. The extraordinarily beautiful islands, beaches, mystical culture and delicious Thai food earn this country a top spot on the world’s most intriguing list.
Popular highlights: Bangkok’s cities and temples, snorkel in the warm water of Koh Phi Phi island surrounded by towering cliffs and rock formations, party in Phuket and enjoy the buzz of shopping at one of the floating markets.
Don’t miss: A trek through the jungle, stopping for a refreshing swim in a waterfall, on elephant back in Phang Nga province.
Best time to go: Year-round. Note that monsoon season is from May to October.
