Family activities for the Easter school holidays

Not going away this holiday? Don’t worry, there is no reason to panic! There are lots of fun things you can do with the family, whether you are going on a local getaway or staying at home.

Easter egg hunting
If you don’t feel like hiding Easter eggs in your garden or home, there are various places around the country where  all you need to do is bring the children -and all the hiding eggs is taken care of.  In Cape Town, the little ones can enjoy all sorts of Easter activities on Table Mountain (Easter Sunday) or tackle the Lindt Gold Bunny Maze at the V&A Waterfront.

In Durban, little ones can search for chocolate stowed away on the Phantom ship wreck at uShaka Marine World or enjoy Easter egg hunting while learning about the rehabilitation of wildlife at Yellow Wood Park in Durban South.

In the Johannesburg and Pretoria area, Easter celebrations are happening all weekend at Stonehaven on Vaal on the banks of the river, kids can enjoy a hunt at Ludwig's Roses in Pretoria while afterwards the family can picnic next to the rose garden or enjoy a family day out at Cedar Junction, Pretoria, a haven for little people!

Enjoy some sun
Make the last of the summer rays of sunshine by enjoying a day at the beach, dam, river, park or even in your garden. Put up a tent or umbrella, bring along some games (beach bats, bucket and umbrella, beach ball, Frisbee, etc) and snacks, and enjoy some quality family time away from the TV.

Have an adventure
Whether you are planning on bungee jumping off Bloukrans Bridge, riding the Cobra at Ratanga Junction, striking gold at Gold Reef City, splashing about at uShaka Marine World or going river rafting, go-karting, rock climbing, abseiling or paintballing, we live in the perfect country to enjoy a host of adventure activities, be it at a theme park or in the great outdoors.

Be a tourist in your area
When you live in the same area for so long, you can often take the attractions around you for granted. Make these holidays a chance to explore – it’s refreshing being a tourist for a day! City sightseeing Hop On-Hop Off buses in Cape Town and Johannesburg are a fantastic way to explore your city with the whole family.

Get close to nature’s precious creatures
Visit a game reserve and go on a game drive, swim with the penguins at Boulders Beach, visit the ostriches at Oudtshoorn, go scuba diving at Sodwana or encounter a hippo up-close at St Lucia. If you are planning on visiting the Kruger National Park be sure to pre-book if you are a day visitor. (Visit the San Parks website for information). Or closer to home, visit an aquarium or even sit on the couch and watch the Discovery channel and National Geographic – at least then it’s educational!
