5 activities to do in Victoria Falls

David Livingstone, on seeing the Victoria Falls for the first time in 1855, wrote of “scenes so lovely that must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight”. The Victoria Falls is understandably on many travel bucket lists and against the backdrop of this wonder of the world, are a host of activities for you to enjoy to make the most of your African adventure.

Victoria Falls Tram & Steam Train
Journey into the adventure and romance of a bygone era on board a 19th-century style tram. The Victoria Falls Steam Train Company offers morning and sunset tram tours to the Victoria Falls Bridge for a fun and theatrical Bridge Tour. This historic bridge is suspended 111 metres above the Zambezi River and affords spectacular views of the Falls.

If steam trains are more your thing, step on board the authentic No. 512 Steam Train which takes you across the Bridge and briefly into the neighbouring Zambezi National Park. Their world renowned excursions include a sunset bridge tour, moonlight dinner run and Zambezi Lager Party Express.

High Tea at the Victoria Falls Hotel
The Victoria Falls Hotel has always been known as the “grand old lady of the Falls”. Established in 1904, this gracious colonial style hotel was recently refurbished and still epitomises the romance of travel from an era gone by. Traditional high tea is served every afternoon on the hotel’s Stanley’s Terrace, affording views of the Victoria Falls Bridge and the Falls themselves.

Helicopter ride
The best way to appreciate the true splendour of the world’s largest curtain of falling water? By air! From the short “Flight of Angels” 15 minute trip to longer trips that take in the thrilling Batoka Gorges before flying over the Zambezi National Park where you can spot game from the air, a helicopter flip is a must-do.

Zambezi River adventures
From August to December, when the river conditions are right, experience what is regarded by some as the greatest white water rafting run in the world. 19 rapids and a thousand memories. An activity for the adventurous!

Another one for the fearless is boogie boarding…Take on the rapids of the Zambezi with nothing more than a body board and flippers – just you against the mighty Zambezi.

Cruise the Zambezi
On the Zambian side, a cruise on the African Queen or African Princess provides a more leisurely way to enjoy the beauty of the river while spotting game from the deck. Hippo, crocodile, elephant and sometimes even rhino can be seen wallowing in the river.
