Four fabulous days in Dubai

Always wondered if Dubai is worth a visit? Razia Haribans from Sure Mithas Travel in Durban certainly thinks so. This is her account of her four fabulous days in the vibrant, exciting and diverse city of Dubai…

Perfect weather greeted us as we arrived at Dubai International airport. As we arrived early, the terminals were quiet. En route to Ivory Hotel Apartments, we were thrilled to view the magnificent architecture in the hotels and office buildings from Deira and Bur Dubai to Sheik Zayed Road and finally to Al Barsha. Thumbs up to Deluxe Ivory Hotel Apartments who gave us a very early check-in and great service.

After freshening up we raced to EK mall across the road from the hotel. We were greeted by 100’s of designer shops lined next to each other. From Gucci and Nine West to Louis Vuitton, you will be spoilt for choice. We then headed for the famous Ski Dubai. We chose a snow pass allowing us 4 rides. After getting appropriately dressed in our ski suits, we were ready for the chill! Freezing is not an adequate word to use once you enter Ski Dubai. Despite the suits, temperatures were extremely cold.  We enjoyed unlimited ski rides in the ski lift and had such fun playing in the snow.

Afterwards we headed for the metro station situated at Dubai Mall. Upon arriving, it was a very long walk to the mall entrance but was definitely worth the walk as the Dubai Mall is a magnificent sight to behold. An aquarium in the centre of the mall, Ice rink, Kids Zania, Merry-Go-Round with pony’s and of course a host of shopping outlets including RODEO drive and Victoria’s Secret.

We headed for the well-known musical fountains in the afternoon. Huge masses of people had gathered in anticipation of the display. All watched with bated breath as the music and water dazzled the audience .It was a spectacular sight to behold.

Burj Kalifa, the tallest building in the world, stood tall and proud above us. It was truly a work of art especially with the lights twinkling at night. Our fabulous day ended with delicious dynamite shrimps from PK Changs at Dubai Mall. Heavenly!

We started Saturday with a city tour. Highlights included the Dubai Creek, the Gold Souk , the Jumeriah mosque, Burj Al Arab, The Palm Jumeirah, Atlantic The Palm and the iconic Burj Kalifa, Jumeirah residences , Media City and Internet city.

Our afternoon was once again spent at the famous EK mall with midnight chocolate cookies at Häagen-Dazs and Hershey’s chocolate cake from The Cheesecake factory. A taste sensation .

Our evening was spent on board a traditional Dhow beautifully decorated in lights. The cruise included a buffet dinner as we cruised the Dubai Creek in the company of the friendly local and international guests. The buildings were lit up and looked especially spectacular at night. Our evening ended with a traditional Tanoura dance.

We left Al Barsha for bustling Deira on Sunday. En route we saw fabulous buildings and many popular hotels. Shopping centres included Burjuman shopping mall , Al Gurair Shopping Centre and Deira city centre. Deira was an extremely busy area.

In the afternoon we were picked up for the famous Desert Safari tour in a 4 x 4. After an awesome ride on the dunes we headed for our camp in the desert. We were greeted by camels and immediately enjoyed a ride on them at the entrance to our camp. Quad bikes are also available for bike enthusiasts. Complimentary drinks, henna tattoos, Hubbly Bubbly and snacks  awaited us as we relaxed on cushions like desert princesses. The atmosphere was very relaxed and the mood light. The weather was perfect for being out in the open  with just the stars above us. The entertainment was excellent as we enjoyed our bbq dinner while we watched the traditional tanoura dance and belly dancing being performed.

Our final day was spent in Deira – a shopper’s paradise. From Naif road and Naif souk to Al Manzil and Al Wasal and Deira city centre, you will find many delightful goods. Metro trains are easily accessible from all parts of Dubai and very economical. Shop till you drop while you bargain!

The time to head home finally arrived and with heavy hearts we bid farewell to this beautiful city, with the hope of returning very soon.
